A South Korean construction company has proposed
to build a crossing bridge or tunnel in Yangon, a Myanmar official said.
“A sky bridge or an immersed tube under the
Yangon River will be built in the near future. The construction plan could be
on the Shwedagon Pagoda Road,” said secretary of the Yangon City Development
Committee (YCDC) Kyaw Soe on November 5.
Kyaw Soe said that the proposal to build the
crossing facility connecting Yangon central downtown and Dala in the southern
bank of Yangon River, was made in October last year.
However, the plan was kept as the secret by the
YCDC due to the speculators.
The YCDC refused to reveal the name of the South
Korean company. It also declined to give the detail of the proposed project,
including the length and the cost of the bridge.
“The project could be starting soon. This
is why they did not announce the proposal made by the foreign company,” said a
source.
According to analysis of the YCDC’s engineers,
the Shwedagon Pagoda Road is the suitable location for building a connecting
tunnel or bridge.
“Due to the high rises on the Sule Pagoda Road
and the Pansodan Road, it should not be built on those roads,” said engineers
of the South Korean company.
If the company is permitted to construct, it will
base its office in the Railway Office in Yangon next month.
