Myanmar’s official border trade volumes have reached around US$2 billion within seven months this financial year while monthly illegal trade is getting about hundreds of millions of dollars, the Border Trade Department says.
This year’s border trade is estimated to remain the same as that of the previous year due to the violence in Rakhine and Kachin states.
The reason behind the continued surge in border trade is because of the government’s crackdown on illegal border trade and issuance of licenses within a day.
The trade volumes from April to October are nearly US$2billion.
The trade via Muse Border Trade Camp alone was worth US$1.5bn while that of Myawady Border Trade Camp amounted to US$80 million, according to the department’s sources.
Myanmar has border trade activities with China, Thailand, Bangladesh and India. Among them, China and Thailand are its largest partners in both legal and illegal trade.
Illegally exported goods from those two countries are machine oil, edible oil, foodstuff, electrical appliances and household things. They illegally import timber, jade, minerals and gems and jewelries from Myanmar.
Myanmar’s fuel demand has increased sharply because Myanmar imported more cars this year. The legal import of machine oil, however, has decreased this year compared with the previous, prompting authorities to expose smugglers.
