Increased demand for building material lures industrialists

Businesses at home and abroad are preparing to compete for a growing market for building materials in Myanmar, according to sources within and outside the country.
Following economic reforms, there has been a surge in demand this year, said Steel King, a company that sells construction materials.
Myanmar has received proposals from some foreign companies that want to run cement factories in the country.
The Siam Cement Group (SCG) told the Bangkok Post earlier in October that it was waiting for the foreign investment law to come into effect in Myanmar.
Seaman Gresik, the biggest cement company in Indonesia, told the Jakarta Globe that it was planning a cement factory in Myanmar, adding the company would set up a joint venture with a local businessman.
It was also reported in the Bangkok Post that LV Technology, a public company, would cooperate with Max Myanmar, a local giant in the cement industry.
With assistance from LV Technology, the local company will be able to increase its production of cement from 500 tonnes a day at present to 2,600 tonnes by the end of next year. Max Myanmar hoped to produce up to 4,200 tonnes by 2014.
Statistics show Myanmar so far has 15 cement plants.
Among popular cement brands in the country are SCG, Anchor, Insee, Mountain and TPI, with their prices ranging from 4,300 to 5,000 kyats per bag.
